1. Conference and Content Manager


A truly exceptional opportunity has arisen for a talented, creative and hardworking individual to join a successful and fast paced team and build fantastic contacts with key influencers across the financial services landscape.

This is an ideal role for an ambitious Conference Manager looking to further their career within an established and well-respected company whose mission is to enable financial services to do better business commercially, intelligently and ethically. Owen James has built a reputation for running sophisticated and relevant high-end events underpinned by substantial research. This activity is primarily event based however there is a heavy emphasis on adding value through consultancy and research.

The role primarily incorporates a mix of research and content writing, but also includes relationship-building. You will play a key role in developing the content ensuring our events remain at the leading edge and meet the changing needs of our growing audience across the financial service industry. As a Conference Manager you would be responsible for all aspects of the research, agenda writing and speaker acquisition. Using your commercial and production experience you will help guide how sponsor partners fit into our programmes and build the value proposition behind sponsorship for each event (virtual and live).

Reporting to our Chief Operating Officer, you will alongside our Conference Relationship Manager to create cutting-edge conference programmes and assist with other company content requirements (Research Reports, Post Event Publications, etc).

 Key Responsibilities

  • Market research across our communities – stay constantly up to date on the latest Financial Services news and suggest any new topic areas that Owen James should be moving into. This will be mainly telephone, virtual and face-to-face research, but also desk-based research. You will work closely with senior executives to develop leading-edge conference and event product agendas that respond to the needs of our audience and sponsors
  • Conference delivery - ensure the timely delivery of conference programmes across our events. This includes developing the agendas and speaker line ups for Owen James in-person and virtual events with input from the advisory boards, sales and marketing teams, as well as sponsors, facilitators and other senior industry executives. 
    This currently entails:
    - Ten Meeting of Minds events
    - Seven Breakfast Briefing series
    - Four satellite events (3 x WealthTech Matters and 1x Paraplanning Excellence)
    - Circa 3 Red Folder events
  • Identify high-level industry speakers. Source, test, recruit and brief inspirational keynote speakers, external experts and facilitators to deliver presentations/sessions within budget
  • Manage speaker relationships for each event. Initial outreach and confirmation, on-going logistical communication, PPT collection and review, onsite speaker management
  • Manage advisory boards for each community. We currently target six advisory boards
  • Producing pre and post event research. This will incorporate data analysis and reporting, plus copywriting and proofreading skills
  • Collaboration with:
    - The events team. Work closely with the event operations team to ensure operational requirements of the events are met.
    - Marketing team. Assist the marketing team to identify compelling messaging and ensure communications are accurate. This will include developing copy for marketing materials.
    - Sales team. Assist the sponsorship team to ensure suitable sponsors are identified and targeted appropriately. You will be the point person for sponsor sales calls to be able to answer all content questions. You will be expected to liaise with sponsors to help them deliver content that is insightful and attractive for the delegate audiences, but also delivers ROI for the sponsors.
  • Delivering a fantastic client experience. You will be responsible for the execution of all conference sessions, ensuring excellent delivery smooth running on the day and providing live content deliverables for marketing and reporting. You will be expected to attend the events and on-site key stakeholder liaison
  • Manage conference and content budget
  • Strategic input to Owen James growth. You will be a key contributor to the commercial strategy behind each event. Collaborate with the wider team from start to finish to deliver a highly finished event.

Attitude, skills and experience 

  • Excellent copywriting & proofreading skills and an eye for detail
  • Excellent data analysis and reporting skills
  • Computer literacy – advanced in Microsoft Office particularly Excel Confident telephone manner and excellent written skills
  • Good relationship management skills and a team player
  • The ability to manage multiple stakeholders & work across teams to ensure the success of the event
  • Proactive and enthusiastic, with a professional and can-do attitude
  • Experience in conducting in-depth desk research, phone and face-to-face interviews to scope out topics (not essential but desirable).

Position details 

Salary range and benefits:

  • Salary available upon application and based on experience
  • We review salaries regularly and readily reward where appropriate
  • Holiday allowance is 20 days per annum plus the period between Christmas and New Year depending upon when the holidays fall
  • For every year of service completed this allowance increases by one day up to a limit of 25 days in total
  • Contract type: Permanent role, 5 days a week – Flexi-work encouraged and we ask that your work from an office at least two days a week to encourage team collaboration
  • Location: We are pretty flexible about where you are based but our head office is based in Godalming and we ask that all employees be prepared to make the journey at least once a month. However, we do have opportunities to work from a London office. Plus, it is worth mentioning that we typically run 40 in-person events a year which you are expected to attend (very early start) and the majority of them are based in London, so commutable to London is essential

2. Relationship Manager

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, growing events and research company specialising in the world of financial services. Our successful and fast paced team are looking for a talented, self-motivated, well-presented and hardworking individual who is confident talking to people at a senior level.

The role incorporates a mix of research and relationship-building and reports to our Chief Operating Officer - Stephanie Walsh. The current Delegate Relationship Manager in this position will be taking maternity leave however, given how well we pivoted during the pandemic to deliver virtual and hybrid events, we have exciting growth plans and see this as a permanent role.

We are looking for someone to nurture the fantastic relationships we have already built, but also help build new relationships and event opportunities in the Wealth Management & Private Banking space.

The successful candidate needs to be computer literate, have good attention to detail, be a team player and have fresh ideas to encourage the potential growth within our business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Delegate Recruitment and Relationship Management – to identify the right delegates to invite, build and maintain relationships with these key influencers primarily via phone, email and face-to-face to recruit them as participants for our events and keep accurate records
  • Marketing Communications – to help develop and execute communication strategies and produce marketing materials to engage the different groups of clients in an on-going, engaging and consistent manner
  • Industry Research – source new contacts, build an understanding of clients’ needs and industry issues
  • Event Management – support the Event Management team in the execution of the six-monthly cycle of activities for each ‘Meeting of Minds’ along with smaller bespoke events and research projects, as and when required
  • Act as an ambassador for the company – during all meetings and events
  • Team Player - working with our events, conference, sales and marketing teams to deliver a seamless client experience across our events and contribute to a fun, productive culture in the company

Attitude, skills and experience 

  • Great relationship management skills
  • Good spoken and written English crucial
  • Confidence on the telephone and in meetings - to be able to communicate confidently and effectively to a wide range of clients, including those at the most senior levels, in an appropriate and sensitive manner through all forms of communication media
  • Project management skills – the ability to work to strict deadlines, prioritising as necessary. The ability to manage multiple stakeholders and work across teams to ensure the success of the event
  • Flexibility – we are a small team and you need to be a team player
  • Professionalism – to act as an ambassador for the company, reflecting the values and mission of Owen James in all meetings, events and communications
  • IT literacy – to be a competent user of Microsoft Office particularly Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Self-motivation - proactive and enthusiastic, with a professional and can-do attitude. To work unsupervised, to be able to identify possible clients from extensive market reading and to develop these into established contacts
  • Analytical and organisation skills. To analyse data and market information and to conclude and present report results. Must be highly organised and able to show attention to detail. Experience in conducting in-depth desk research, phone and face-to-face interviews to scope out topics is not essential but desirable

Salary range and benefits:

  • Salary available upon application and based on experience (as a guide we would anticipate paying a Delegate Relationship Manager with 3 years’ experience circa 30K + 2K Bonus)
  • We review salaries regularly and readily reward where appropriate

3. Marketing Coordinator 

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, growing events and research company specialising in the world of financial services. Our successful and fast paced team are looking for a savvy Marketing Coordinator who is self-motivated, hardworking, with a marketing background and who is confident with their ideas and hungry to continue to grow.

This role will provide support for the business’ marketing initiatives and plan and will be tasked with creating and implementing relevant marketing initiatives to further sales and attendance to meet event targets.

The duties will include delivering marketing campaigns, creating and coordinating marketing content and facilitating cross-functional team efforts.

The successful candidate needs to be computer literate, have a good eye for detail, excellent proof-reading skills, be a team player and have fresh ideas to encourage the potential growth within our business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting the development and execution of the company’s marketing and branding strategies
  • Actively taking part in marketing campaigns
  • Devise new initiatives and original copy for the website and social media that will grow sales
  • Measure the success of the marketing strategies
  • Write and proofread copy, ensuring a consistent tone of voice
  • Use analytics to monitor the performance, and utilise these reports for future strategies
  • Understanding brand guidelines and consistently implementing the brand voice across all channels and marketing materials
  • Create email templates within the marketing automation platform and provide reports on email campaign performance
  • Monitoring marketing industry news and emerging trends
  • Supporting internal communication campaigns to effectively distribute key information

Attitude, skills and experience 

  • Extremely organised - ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills - both written and verbal, with an excellent telephone manner
  • Creative flair with excellent attention to detail
  • Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills
  • Tech savvy - with desired experience in using InDesign, Canva or other design software
  • Flexibility – we are a small team and you need to be a team player

  • Systems - ideally worked with a CRM system previously
  • Experience - you will possess a degree level qualification in Marketing or have demonstrable experience within a marketing team, ideally B2B
