The Beacon Philanthropy and Impact Forum will bring together 150 prominent philanthropists and social investors, thought leaders and sector pioneers and participation is by invite only. 

The Forum will be held at the Guildhall, London on 30 November 2022 and is sponsored by the City of London's Charitable Funding Arm City Bridge Trust.

The aim of the Forum is to convene both domestic and international philanthropists for speeches, discussions and networking. By doing this, we hope to stimulate a more active, generous and impactful philanthropic landscape in the UK.

It’s a day for changemakers to come together and dissect topics at the forefront of philanthropy. A range of roundtables will cover subjects including:

  • Philanthropy and the great wealth transfer
  • Increasing diverse representation in philanthropy 
  • Place-making in action (with real-world examples)
  • The power and promise of peer support and influence
  • How to create a holistic investment portfolio
  • Celebrating feminine philanthropy and social investment
  • Has Covid19 and Ukraine changed our giving priorities?

    Lyn has 20 years experience in financial services and joined Cazenove in 2014. She is Head of Impact, responsible for the impact investing and philanthropy client proposition. Lyn is a member of the Cazenove sustainable leadership team. She sits on the sustainable investment and asset class committees which are responsible for the investment strategy, selection and monitoring of sustainable and impact funds held within client portfolios.Lyn is a member of the investment committee of the Schroders Big Society Capital Social Impact Trust.     James Routledge is the Founder and CEO of Sanctus, a purpose-driven organisation with a mission to transform perceptions around mental health and put the world's first mental health gym on the high street. He founded Sanctus after his own experiences with poor mental health, which he documented on his viral Medium blog. Since then, James has built a strong social media network which works to break down stigma around the topic of mental health and, through Sanctus, has coached over 10,000 employees directly on how to improve their mental wellbeing. His work has been featured in The Times, the Guardian, and on BBC TV and radio and he is a regular public speaker around the world.

    Kate’s background is in academia, earning her PhD in English Literature at King’s College London, where she also taught undergraduates. She has a sprawling career as a writer of academic, educational and cultural pieces, as well as working as a freelance communications consultant for a number of socially and community-minded organisations. Alongside her role at ASP, she runs cultural courses for adults that explore the complex histories of cultural phenomena through literature.

    Gus O’Donnell has been non-Executive Chairman of Frontier (Europe) since October 2013. After joining the Treasury in 1979, Gus held various positions at the British Embassy in Washington, International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. From 2002 – 2005, he was Permanent Secretary at the Treasury and in 2005 became Cabinet Secretary on the retirement of Lord Turnbull. He held this position until 2011, serving three Prime Ministers. Gus studied Economics at the University of Warwick, and gained an MPhil in Economics from Nuffield College, Oxford and went on to lecture in economics at the University of Glasgow. Gus O’Donnell joined Frontier as Senior Advisor in 2012 and became Chairman in 2013. In his role at Frontier, Gus draws on his extensive experience to provide strategic advice on all aspects of Frontier’s work. Gus also takes a key role in shaping Frontier’s development of cutting edge behavioural economics to support public and private sector decision making.

    John Studzinski CBE is an Anglo-American financier and a prolific philanthropist. As a leader in financial services, with an almost 40-year career, he currently serves as Managing Director and Vice Chairman of PIMCO. His commitment to volunteering, fundraising and philanthropy has found expression in the context of prestigious global institutions and start-ups conceived to meet specific needs. In 2001, John founded the Genesis Foundation which supports outstanding artists and creative professionals, especially in the early stages of their careers. Since its inception, the Genesis Foundation has donated over £20 million to supporting young creatives and the Arts. It has partnered with organisations including the Young Vic, National Theatre, Almeida Theatre, and The Sixteen. As Founding President of Arise, established in 2015, he furthers frontline work on four continents which aims to put an end to human trafficking and modern slavery. He is also the first Chairman of Business Action on Homelessness and was one of the founders of The Passage, the UK’s largest centre for homeless and insecurely housed people. John is Chairman of the Benjamin Franklin House Museum and currently serving a second term on the Board of the J. Paul Getty Trust. Previously, John served over three terms on the Board of the Tate and was Vice-Chairman at Human Rights Watch. He was formerly Chairman of the American Friends of The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. Awarded a CBE in 2008 for his services to the Arts and Charity, John Studzinski has received the Papal honours of Knight of the Order of St. Gregory and Knight Commander of St. Sylvester, the Beacon Prize for Philanthropy, the Prince of Wales Medal for Arts Philanthropy and various other awards. John Studzinski holds an MBA from the University of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College.

    Founder and Chair, First Star Scholars UK

    Co-Founder and President of First Star, and CEO of PhilmCo Media llc, Mr. Samuelson is a serial pro-social entrepreneur. In 1982 he co-founded the Starlight Children’s Foundation; by 1990 the positive psychological impact of Starlight seeded his next pro-social endeavor, Starbright World, co-founded with Steven Spielberg. 1999 saw the formation of First Star, 2005 EDAR Everyone Deserves a Roof, and 2013 saw him launch ASPIRE, the Academy for Social Purpose in Responsible Entertainment. In the midst of all this Peter has produced 26 films and raised four children. Educated at Cambridge and the Anderson School of Management at UCLA, Peter resides in Los Angeles with his wife Saryl, and continues to fight every day for those less fortunate, chief among them America’s abused and neglected children.

    Dulma Clark is Impact Investment & Storytelling Lead at VIVOBAREFOOT, natural health lifestyle brand on a mission to reconnect people to nature and human natural potential. Within VIVOVBAREFOOT, she launched Livebarefoot Fund, an in-house impact fund for research, innovation, and advocacy to regenerate human and planetary health; worked with indigenous communities to preserve traditional craftsmanship and open a manufacturing center in Ethiopia to provide jobs and value add on locally sourced materials. Dulma also serves as an Impact Investment Trustee at JA Clark Charitable Trust and holds several impact advisory roles in the development sector. Born in Siberia in indigenous Buryat indigenous community, she co-founded a local farmer’s cooperative with her parents and supported the set-up of an environmental NGO Safe Baikal. LSE graduate in Human Rights, Champion of Russia in archery and mother of 2. Interests: social business, impact investment, indigenous wisdom and natural health.

    Alastair Stewart joined GB News in June 2021 and presents ‘ALASTAIR STEWART AND FRIENDS’, on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as other programmes. Alastair has worked in TV news for over four decades. He wanted to be a politician or a lawyer but was offered a job by Southern ITV in 1976 and thought he’d give it a go. Four years later he joined ITN as an Industrial Correspondent and went on to become a newscaster. At one time or another he has presented all the ITN news programmes. In that time, he covered the miners’ strikes, the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the first Gulf War and liberation of Kuwait - where he was the first Brit’ on the scene - the shuttle Challenger disaster, Lockerbie, more General Elections than you can shake a margin of error at, Budgets, State Openings of Parliament, Royal Weddings and a host of other Royal occasions. He also presented the first ever party leaders debate on British TV, ahead of the 2010 General Election. He loves reporting but is addicted to live, breaking news.

    Bill Holroyd

    Founder, OnSide YouthZones

    Bill was born on a farm in Eskdale, Cumbria and attended Keswick School. He went on to study Hotel Management at Courtfield College in Blackpool. Realising that hotel management was not for him he joined Trusthouse Forte’s supply division where he stayed for eight years, creating and running their national distribution network. In 1982 he left THF to set up his own foodservice distribution company, Holroyd Meek. By 1994 the company had a turnover of £190m serving over 7,000 restaurants across the UK. In 1995 Booker acquired the company and Bill started his own investment company. Between 1995 and 2020 he has invested in over 30 start-up and second-stage companies. Major successes have been Millies Cookies, Positive Solutions, AO World, Artorius and UCFB (University of Football) and Evergreen Life. In 2008 Bill founded OnSide Youth Zones, a charity providing safe and inspiring, state-of-the-art facilities for young people in their leisure time. Fifteen Youth Zones are now completed with a further fourteen in process. At present over 50,000 young people are regular users of the Youth Zones. In 2013 Bill was awarded the CBE; in 2015 he was the High Sheriff for Cheshire and awarded a Beacon Fellowship for Philanthropy. Bill lives in Cheshire and is married to Julie. They have four children. Recreational interests include classic cars, rallying and trekking.

    Stephanie qualified as a private wealth lawyer in 2011 and practised at a law firm in the City of London for a decade. During her time in private practice, Stephanie advised a variety of domestic and international clients on a broad range of matters concerning their private wealth. Stephanie gained an outstanding reputation in the private wealth industry and was named one of eprivateclient’s Top 35 Under 35 in 2020 and 2018. She was also listed as a Rising Star in the tax and trust category of the Spear’s indices 2019 and was named in the Spear’s 500 as a recommended tax and trust lawyer in 2020. Shortly before leaving private practice, Stephanie was ranked as an ‘Associate to Watch’ in Chambers & Partners High Net Worth Guide 2021. In September 2021 Stephanie launched the Good Ancestor Movement, a social purpose business which exists to disrupt the mainstream wealth advisory industry by challenging traditional ideas around the economy, excessive wealth accumulation and tax minimisation. The Good Ancestor Movement supports wealthy individuals, families and charitable foundations with progressive wealth stewardship and radical redistribution. Stephanie is a dedicated social sector leader and has served as a trustee of youth charities FAST London and e:merge; and The Funding Network, a charity which hosts live crowdfunding events for not-for-profit organisations pursuing social change.

    Orlando Fraser has been a commercial barrister for nearly 30 years, practising at 4 Stone Buildings. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2014. Previously he served on the board of the Charity Commission from 2013 to 2017, where he acted as one of two statutory legal members and chaired the Governance & Remuneration Committee as well as the Policy & Guidance Committee. Orlando has also served on the Civil Justice Council and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations’ Advisory Council.

  • Dr Giles Shilson

    Dr Giles Shilson

    Chair, Bridge House Estates

    Dr Giles Shilson was educated at St Paul’s School and Balliol College, Oxford, where he read Modern Languages and Experimental Psychology. He tutored Psychology undergraduates whilst reading for a doctorate in cognitive neuroscience and, after two years of further study at City University and the Inns of Court School of Law, was called to the Bar by the Middle Temple. He practised as a barrister until 2005, leaving the law to develop his business interests. After six years managing a market-leading international design consultancy in London and three years as a principal executive officer at the Honourable Artillery Company, he now maintains a portfolio of Chief Executive, Director and Board-level appointments across the charity and private sectors. A liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers, he sits on various bodies of the City of London Corporation, including the Policy & Resources, Culture Heritage & Libraries, Markets and City Bridge Trust Committees. A Past Chairman of the Board of Governors of the City of London School, he is currently Chairman of both the Barbican Centre and the Gresham Committee (City Side).
